After a not so peaceful night of talking, snoring(curtsy of Dave), and back pain finally it was time to wake up at 4:45.
Nutritional and filling breakfast of Chocolate Cheerios.
Left for the park at 5:17:13, as seen above.
When we got there around 5:40 there were about 12 people in front of us, some had been there since 2:00 or earlier. It was pretty darn freezing in the canyon where it was extra windy but we survived. We filled the time till 7:00, when the office opens, with discussing our tactic on how to make it into the subway with out a permit, eating bananas, bathroom breaks, and more giggling.
Our plan:
- Obtain 2 Dos Boot permits, a canyon connected to The Subway in which you are required to hike out before the Subway entrance.
- Get 9 permits for Pinecreek for the next day.
- Hike Dos Boot and continue down the Subway with the chance of a ranger checking our permit.
Real Life:
- Obtained permits for Dos Boot
- Obtained a permit for Key Hole (no Pinecreek permits left)
- Were informed of the 5,000 dollar fee, for each person, not abiding by their permit.
- Got Scared and devised a new plan.
"cuddling" to keep warm.
After we devised a back up plan we met up with the rest of our group.
Michelle, Braden, and Steven. Michelle and Braden are married, Steven is a tag along :)
Forgot his name...shoot, and Kendra who is Andrew's cousin and her husband.
Front: Andrew and I Back: Dave and Todd
These three pictures are on the tram up to the Emerald Pools Hike.
Some things I found out VERY quickly on the Emerald Pools hike is Andrew is a hiking machine, there is no catching up to Andrew unless you sprint and even when you catch up you're only with him for 2 seconds and are so out of breath you can't say anything. I also found out that Dave complains a lot, and my cardiovascular system sucks! The hike was really fun and a good warm up for the rest of the day. The top pool is the prettiest and we spent a lot of time there. Todd and Andrew practiced their Parcore skills jumping 10 feet from a rock to a sandbar (hopefully a movie will be added later).
Everyone at the lowest pool.
Our Indian War paint.
Next we headed to the trail of the Subway and blasted Wicked and Aida on th way. First mile of the hike is straight down to the bottom of a canyon and the rest is rock hopping through the river 3 miles up the canyon.
The most massive spider i've seen. Andrew was too quick to notice it but i sure didnt miss it!
After a while of river hopping you give up and just walk straight through the water not caring how much you get wet. I have to admit I'm oober clumsy when it comes to these things, I probably fell or stumbled every ten feet.
Todd, King of the rock!
Self timed shot.
Boy do they look handsome.
Name guy and Kendra
I caught them kissing behind the corner...
There were a lot of swim holes so some of us decided to take a dive and cool off.
Dave takin a rest
After getting out of the canyon we got ready to head out but not before a ranger came over to check out permit. We were rather confused because we thought we didn't one from the bottom. We tried to work out way of a citation with out success. 175 dollar ticket / 9 people= about 20 dollars each. Not the greatest end to the hike but we all agreed that it was worth it.
The four of us cleaned up a bit at the RV and sped to St George to get our climb on! We had enough time for each of us to climb once. Climbing on red rock is soooo much fun, I wish i could have had more time to climb. There were a bunch of old dudes, ripped, with leathery skin that were pretty entertaining to watch.
Andrew leading a 5.10 A. Look at his calf and forearm....wow!
Me attempting to be as cool as Andrew with out success. He pretty much hoisted me up the rock from the belay.
After it got to dark to climb, we once again met up with the rest of the crew for dinner at Pocho and Lefties (no idea how to spell it) in St. Geezy. The food was great, I smoothed over getting some free fried tortillas covered in sugar since they didn't have any scones.
At the end of dinner my waiter explained to me how to fill out my receipt, I was really confused as to why wondering if I looked handicap or something until he added at the end "and here is my number if you ever want to give me a call". I decided if i was ever in St. George again i'd have to ;) We also decided he must do it on a regular bases because he did it a little too smooth so i wasn't too flattered.
End of Day 2
Okay when you think that you don't have an exciting life or you haven't done anything awesome in life. Just remember this! I mean what girl would go camping/hiking with a bunch of guys she doesn't know very well and end up having a blast?! You live a pretty exciting life. You may not be seeing the world, but maybe it isn't all that it's cracked up to be?
